The Chairman of the Committee on Works, Transport and Aviation at the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hon Peter Eze, has pledged strict enforcement of the Federal Character principle, assuring Nigerians that the committee will carry out its constitutional mandate with diligence and resolve.
Eze made the commitment yesterday during the committee’s inaugural meeting at the FCC headquarters in Abuja.
The committee is one of 25 operational panels recently approved at the Commission’s weekly plenary presided over by the Executive Chairman, Hon Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, as part of reforms aimed at strengthening the agency’s effectiveness.
Addressing members drawn from the six geopolitical zones, Eze said the committee’s primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with the laws establishing the FCC, particularly across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under the Federal Ministries of Works, Transport and Aviation.
He stressed that the Federal Character principle, enshrined in the Constitution, is designed to prevent the domination of public institutions by any region or group and to guarantee equitable representation in federal appointments and recruitments.
Citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described the Commission as the “conscience of the nation,” Eze said the committee understands the weight of its responsibility and is determined to meet expectations by promoting fairness, equity and national cohesion.
“The laws establishing the Federal Character Commission are clear. Our duty is not ceremonial. We are here to ensure full implementation and compliance.
“Every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, gender or region, deserves equal opportunity in public service,” he said.
Eze added that effective enforcement of the Commission’s mandate would strengthen national unity, deepen patriotism and foster a stronger sense of belonging among citizens.
According to him, visible fairness in federal appointments builds trust and loyalty to the state.
He reaffirmed the Executive Chairman’s commitment to repositioning the Commission and assured that the committee would operate with transparency, accountability and firm adherence to constitutional provisions.
