
Fake news has succeeded in collapsing the state security architecture, President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo, has said.
In his keynote during the 2022 Press Week organised by Niger State council of NUJ in Minna, yesterday, Isiguzo said that fake news is also capable of causing religious, ethnic and political crises.
To end fake news, the NUJ president charged journalists to fact-check every report brought before them, no matter the source, adding: “If journalists can unite, the menace of fake news will reduce.”
He stressed that journalists are faced with numerous challenges in the course of discharging their professional responsibility.
Earlier, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State said fake news has led to disunity among Nigerians. Represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane, the governor assured that his government would continue to partner NUJ without interference with the professional tenet to rid the state of fake news.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Zubairu Dada, who chaired the occasion, stated that journalists have the mandate to set the agenda for national development devoid of fake news.
