Fayose writes Buhari over renaming of Oye-Ekiti varsity

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has written to remind President Muhammadu Buhari about the renaming of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

He urged the president to effect the changes, following its renaming as Adeyinka Adebayo University, after the former Military Governor of the defunct Western State, the late General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo.

He said the then Acting Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had announced the renaming of the varsity at Adebayo’s burial last year, in recognition of the exemplary leadership of the late hero and frontline statesman.

Fayose in the letter, expressed concern that the Federal Government had not reflected the change, almost nine months after the announcement was made.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi, in a letter dated January 29, 2018, with reference number EK/GOV/28/93, urged the president to effect the change without further delay.

Meanwhile, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has donated N500million to the newly established Pamo University of Medical Sciences, owned by former Governor Peter Odili.

Wike announced the donation at the opening of the institute and the installation of former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, as the Chancellor.

The governor also promised to sponsor 100 indigenous students of the university yearly for the next five years.

The governor, who said the state needs more private institutions, added that the grant was to support the development of the school and its students.

He promised to partner private investors to promote tertiary education in the state.

He commended Odili for establishing the university, which, he said, would lead to the training of more qualified medical doctors.

The Chancellor, Abubakar said it was a privilege for him to serve in enhancing the training of more medical doctors in the country.

The Pro-Chancellor, Odili explained that he initiated the university after a chance meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed.

In Benin City, the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) may have pardoned five students union leaders who were recently rusticated by the school.
They were rusticated for alleged involvement in the protest against increment of school and hostel fees.
   
Several groups, including the Chairman of Edo Forum of Patriots Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo, had pleaded with the university authorities to pardon the students.
