The Federal government has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Gen Yakubu Gowon University.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Briefing newsmen, Idris explained that the Council’s decision to rename the University will be transmitted to the National Assembly for further legislative action.

He said the decision is to honour the former head of state and elder statesman.
