The Ministry of Interior has vowed to decongest the over-crowded correctional centres across the country. It also re-affirmed its commitment to support the Nigerian Correctional Services’ mandate to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate inmates back into the society.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stated this at a public advocacy conference on “Decongestion of correctional centres/status quo, organised by the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria, Lagos Metropolitan Council.

Aregbesola, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Suleiman Tala, said prisoners or inmates brought to the custodial centres for admission and the length of time they stay was not determined by the Correctional Service but by the justice system.

He urged civil society and faith-based organisations to play critical roles in rendering services to inmates of the NCOS through offering pro bono cases, and paying fines on behalf of offenders with lesser crimes.
