The University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) has called for urgent government intervention on critical national issues following its 101st Council Meeting held at BON Hotels Royal Parklane in Akure, Ondo State.
In a communique jointly signed by UBAA President Worldwide, Emmanuel Oriazuwa Esq; Secretary-General, Benjamin O. Omere; and National Public Relations Officer, Tosan Ganranwei, the association expressed concern over the worsening condition of federal roads, describing them as dangerous and a threat to lives and property. The council urged both federal and state governments to collaborate on timely repairs, particularly on roads that fall within their jurisdictions.
The association also addressed the political climate, urging elected officials to concentrate on fulfilling their current mandates and to deliver good governance instead of becoming preoccupied with the political activities leading up to the 2027 general elections.
During the meeting, the UBAA Council acknowledged developments in Ondo State, commending Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for visible improvements in infrastructure, education, and the general outlook of the state. It encouraged governors in other states to pursue similar goals for regional development.
On the issue of security, the association expressed deep concern about the rising insecurity in parts of the country and called on the authorities to implement immediate and strategic actions to ensure safety and restore public confidence.
Institutionally, the UBAA praised the leadership of the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie SAN. The council noted the relative peace and developmental efforts under his administration and urged for continued advancement within the institution.
The association also welcomed the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which provides interest-free loans to students. It emphasised the need to fully integrate the scheme into universities to ensure it benefits a wider student population.
The meeting reaffirmed UBAA’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to national dialogue and institutional growth, while promoting accountability and good governance.
Notable attendees at the meeting included UBAA President Emmanuel Oriazuwa Esq; keynote speaker and past President of the association, Prince (Dr) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho SAN; Professor Eddy Erhagbe, Director of the Directorate of Advancement and Alumni Relations, University of Benin; and Mr. Benjamin Omere, Secretary-General of UBAA.
