FG approves Ekiti cargo airport for commercial flight operations

The Federal Government has approved commercial flight operations at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, starting on October 4, 2025. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Yinka Oyebode, described the approval as a significant milestone for the state’s economy.

The airport is also in the process of installing an Instrument Landing System to allow for night and all-weather operations.

This approval follows the expiration of a prior permit for non-scheduled flights in December 2024 and comes after a validation inspection by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in June 2025.

In a letter dated October 3, 2025, the NCAA confirmed that the airport met operational requirements for scheduled flights but issued an interim permit limited to daytime operations until full certification.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and others, including former governor Kayode Fayemi and Aare Afe Babalola, for their contributions to the project. The airport, launched in 2019, had previously only facilitated non-scheduled flights.

“The commencement of commercial operations at the airport will boost agribusiness, tourism development, commercial activities, and medical tourism, which will further position the state as a destination of choice for people looking for where to live, work, invest, and relax,” Oyebanji stated.
