FG inaugurates committee to enforce LG autonomy
Federal Government has inaugurated a ten-man inter-ministerial committee to enforce the Supreme Court judgment on local council autonomy Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, yesterday, announced the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and the Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice as members.
Others are the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Accountant General of the Federation; Governor, the Central Bank of Nigeria; and Permanent Secretary, the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Also to serve as members are the chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation & Fiscal Commission, representative of state governors, representative of local governments.
The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments.
The move, according to the SGF, is in line with President Tinubu’s efforts to give appropriate implementation to the provisions of the Constitution, which recognises local governments as the third tier of government.
