FG, NISO seek lasting solution to persistent grid failures

Following the frequent grid collapses in the country, the Presidential Adviser on Power, Mr Lanre Babalola, at the weekend met with the management of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to fashion out a permanent solution to the problem.

Earlier, Babalola had emphasised the importance of prudent resource management, enhanced operational discipline and sustained efforts towards improving grid performance and reducing system disturbances across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). He reaffirmed NISO’s critical role in driving a more stable, resilient and efficient power sector.

In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of NISO, Abdu Bello Mohammed, assured the delegation of NISO’s unwavering commitment to advancing grid reliability and operational excellence. He also pledged the organisation’s full support towards achieving the shared objective of a more robust and sustainable electricity supply industry.

Recall that the power sector has been working around the clock to fix the issue of persistent grid collapse, which has become an embarrassment to the country.

For instance, the grid collapsed about three times in 2023. It collapsed on September 14, September 19 and December 11, respectively, in 2023.

The grid also collapsed about twelve times in 2024. It collapsed on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, August 5, October 14, October 15, October 19, October 22, November 5, November 7, and December 11, 2024.

The sector under his watch recorded a national grid collapse about four times in 2025. It collapsed on February 12, March 7, September 10, and December 29, 2025.

In 2026, the story is not any better as the grid has collapsed about two times since the beginning of the year. This is despite constituting a six-member Committee to advise the Federal Government on necessary solutions to make the national grid robust and reliable.
