The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), in collaboration with the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, has distributed life-saving aids to vulnerable senior citizens battling various health conditions.
Director General of the NSCC, Dr Emem Omokaro, said the agency had decided to intervene in the health of the aged to assist them, as data reveal over four million of them are poor.
According to her, the centre was established to cater for the aged community.
She said the organisation, in partnership with Gerocare and ATBUTH, organised the medical outreach, considering the health conditions associated with old age.
Omokaro listed wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, and medicated eyeglasses, among others, besides checkups and medications for various health issues.
The Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Prof Jibrin Bara, expressed concern over the traumatising living conditions of senior citizens across the federation.
He lamented that several elderly people were battling with multiple health conditions that drain their resources, saying the most challenging part was contending with the side effects of multiple medications.
