FG reaffirms commitment to FoI
The Solicitor General of the Federation, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, has reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s public sector.
Her remarks came during a conference titled “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector,” held to commemorate the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
Jedy-Agba highlighted recent judicial rulings that have strengthened the Freedom of Information Act, emphasising the judiciary’s critical role in promoting transparency within public institutions.
“Government business must not be shrouded in secrecy,” she stated, aligning her message with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for an open administration.
The conference aimed to assess progress in government information accessibility and foster a culture of openness among public entities.
She disclosed the government’s upcoming “Award of FOIA Compliance 2025,” which will recognise institutions that excel in upholding these principles, setting a new benchmark for accountability in Nigeria.
Jedy-Agba called on government officials, stakeholders, and civil society to engage in meaningful discussions to reshape the landscape of information access in Nigeria, stressing the urgent need for coherent policies across all sectors.
