Fire Guts Bono Energy Terminal As Gas Tanker Leakage Sparks Inferno In Owode

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, yesterday curbed a fire outbreak at Bono Energy Terminal on Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut, Olodi Apapa, Lagos, as workers scampered for safety.

The terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty Complex was reported at 12:04 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026. Firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo Fire Stations responded immediately and arrived at the scene at 12:16 hours.

The incident involved a 5-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank, which was engulfed in flames.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation.

Through the swift, coordinated, and professional efforts of emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, the fire was successfully brought under control and completely extinguished by 13:54 hours.

The prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining tanks and critical infrastructure, thereby minimizing potential losses. No casualty was recorded.

MEANWHILE, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has successfully averted what could have culminated in a major fire disaster following the outbreak of fire from a leaking six-tyre mini gas tanker at the Owode Elede corridor, inward Ikorodu.

The Gas tanker developed a mechanical fault while in transit. In the course of emergency assessment and intervention, a leakage of compressed gas was detected, which subsequently ignited and triggered a fire outbreak around the affected vehicle.

LASTMA Rescue and Recovery Team swiftly mobilized to the scene in concert with personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Through a prompt, coordinated and highly professional emergency response operation, the fire was immediately contained, thereby preventing its escalation into a potentially catastrophic inferno capable of endangering lives, property and critical road infrastructure.

To minimise traffic disruption and maintain seamless vehicular movement within the corridor, LASTMA operatives strategically created an alternative passage by utilising one serviceable lane in conjunction with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor for controlled traffic management.

Consequently, traffic flow along the affected axis was orderly and substantially free-flowing despite the safety operations.

The General Manager of LASTMA commended the swift intervention and synergy demonstrated by all emergency responders, noting that their prompt actions were instrumental in averting a potentially devastating incident.

He further urged motorists to exercise utmost caution, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate fully with emergency personnel.

He said that LASTMA remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, ensuring traffic fluidity and delivering prompt emergency response services across Lagos State’s transportation network.
