General Electric (GE) Foundations through CARE international has provided $100,000, to support people affected by the recent devastating flood in Kogi State.
Kogi State is one of the states severely impacted by the flood, displacing an estimated 5,550 children and submerging 1,380 schools.
President GE Nigeria, Mohammed Mijindadi, while handing over the cheque to the international NGO yesterday in Abuja said: “Addressing the ongoing critical food insecurity and health concerns, resulting from the flooding remains our top priority, as the grant will help alleviate the hardships that many families have to endure, especially as we go into the holiday season”
He stated that CARE is the best partner for local team to work to address urgent hunger and health needs while sending goodwill during these trying times.
Country Director of CARE Nigeria, Hussaini Abdu, commended the donations to flood affected victims in communities in Lokoja, who have been badly displaced by the flood.
“This $100,000 will help the communities that have been displaced by the floods, it will help their recovery efforts and to prepare them for subsequent situations like this, “ he said.
He said the most important thing is not just providing relief materials, but also building their resilience to be able to cope with the menace.
The Country Director said they would be providing food and non-food items, including hygiene kits to targeted households towards the end of the year and in January.
Special Adviser to Kogi State Governor, Otayitie Eminefor, stated that the flood was horrendous and it’s the worst in recent times, stressing that many were displaced and several lives were lost.
He lamented that the flood damaged infrastructure put in place by the state government amid dwindling resources.
“Although several organisations have come to our aid, every help counts even as the financial donations by GE is laudable and commendable,” he said.
