Flood destroys property in Imo State
• Govt Pledges To Assist Victims
Flood has wreaked havoc in three local councils of Imo State. Property and farm crops worth several millions of naira were destroyed.
Areas affected included Orsu Obodo and Oguta, both in Oguta Local Council and Mgbidi in Oru West Local Council.
The Deputy Governor, Gerald Alphonsus Irona, at the weekend, visited some of the affected communities and assured them of government’s determination to provide palliative measures to cushion the effects of the losses.
Irona disclosed that the government would engage experts to undertake a comprehensive study of the level of devastation, with the view to tackling natural disasters.
Responding on behalf of the victims, a community leader and retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Andrew Anele Anyiwo, commended the government for its timely intervention.
In the entourage were: Frank Ugboma, a member representing Oguta Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly; Managing Director of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), Anthony Okwuosha; Chairman, Interim Management Committee of Oguta Local Government Area, Hilary Eberendu; Communications Adviser to the Deputy Governor, Dr. Walter Duru and Disaster Risk Management Specialist, National Emergency Management Agency-NEMA, Evans Ugoh Ignatius, among others.
