Following the release of water from Ladgo Dam by the Camerounian authorities during the peak of recent downpours, which, unfortunately, caused flooding in parts of Nigeria, including communities in Enugu State, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has assured residents of the state, especially those in affected areas, that the state government is tracking the movement of flood water and has mapped out strategies and mechanisms to completely remove or minimise its impact on the people.

In a statement by the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Nkechi Eneh, the state government sympathised with some communities in Uzo-Uwani Council affected by the incident.

Eneh stated that the state government is following the unfortunate development “closely with a view to mitigating or minimising the impact of this flooding.”

SIMILARLY, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has asked Federal Government to dialogue with the government of Cameroun in proffering lasting solutions to floods ravaging the country, especially Anambra.

He also suggested the construction of dams or diversionary channels as part of measures to solve the problem.

Soludo spoke at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Onitsha North Council, where displaced persons from Anambra West and Umuoba Anam and Ekpe Nneyi, Umueri, in Anambra East Council, were being hosted.

He further called for support from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), all levels of government, organisations and good-spirited individuals to alleviate the hardship faced by people displaced by a devastating flood.

He said: “The state government is doing everything possible to alleviate the sufferings of the people. They need support now and afterwards because their houses, properties and farmlands are submerged under water. I’m worried that they will have to start life afresh.

“We are receiving people from Delta State to join IDP Camps in Onitsha North. Today alone, over 400 displaced persons have reported here.”

While empathising with victims, the governor expressed optimism that the flood would soon recede so that they could find their way back to their respective homes.
