FG strengthens digital compliance drive in tax reform

Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has intensified efforts to strengthen the implementation of tax reforms and digital tax compliance in the country.

Engaging medium and emerging taxpayers and other stakeholders in Kano, the Nigeria Revenue Service said the new tax reform was designed to promote fiscal responsibility and contribute to the country’s economic development.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Kano Town Hall Meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, explained that the ongoing reforms were aimed at building a tax administration system that understands taxpayers and responds to the realities of doing business in Nigeria.

Adedeji, who was represented by the Group Director, Government Business, Wande Akinpelu, said the engagement, with the theme, “Tax Reform, Rev360 and E-Invoicing: Shaping the Future of Compliance for Medium and Emerging Taxpayers,” was intended to advance the tax compliance ecosystem.

He described Kano as one of Nigeria’s historic centres of commerce, noting that its markets, industries and trading networks had continued to play a major role in the country’s economic development.

He said the reforms were designed to go beyond new laws and technology by improving how taxpayers register, file returns, make payments, access support and resolve tax-related issues.

According to him, the objective was to create a tax system that was simpler to understand, easier to comply with, transparent and predictable for businesses.

“The direction is straightforward. We want a system that is simpler to understand, easier to comply with, more transparent in its operation and more predictable for businesses,” he said.

Akinpelu explained that Rev360 was introduced to bring major taxpayer services together, making registration, filing, payment and interaction with the Service more accessible.

He added that the e-invoicing initiative would improve the quality and accuracy of transaction information, reduce avoidable disputes and promote a more efficient tax administration system.

“The real test is whether the technology makes compliance easier for the taxpayer. It should reduce paperwork, save time, improve certainty and make dealings with the Service more efficient,” he said.

He added that sustainable revenue growth should increasingly come from a growing economy and successful businesses rather than placing additional pressure on existing taxpayers.

“The Service would continue to strengthen taxpayer education, simplify tax processes, deploy useful digital solutions and maintain direct engagement with businesses.

Our job is to collect the revenue due under the law, but we must also make it as clear and convenient as possible for taxpayers to meet their obligations,” he added.

Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the occasion, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Suleiman Wali Sani, assured the Federal Government of the state’s full support in strengthening revenue generation and improving the state’s tax administration system.

Governor Yusuf said the engagement between the NRS and taxpayers at the grassroots was timely, considering Kano State’s strategic position as the commercial hub of the northern part of the country.

He said the engagement would provide an important platform for understanding the concerns of taxpayers, particularly businesses and investors, while enabling the government to develop policies that would promote compliance and improve revenue collection.
