Former Anambra guber candidate George Moghalu dumps Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the 2025 Anambra State governorship election, Chief Dr. George N. Moghalu, has officially resigned from the opposition party.

Dr. Moghalu announced his decision in a resignation letter dated January 26, 2026, which he personally signed and submitted to the Labour Party chairman in his ward, Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State.

In the letter, the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) formally informed the party of his withdrawal from its membership, with immediate effect.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Labour Party leadership at the ward, state, and national levels for providing him with the platform to contest the off-cycle governorship election held in November last year.

“I bring you the good wishes of my family and to formally inform you of my resignation from the Labour Party effective today, the 26th of January, 2026,” the letter read.

Dr. Moghalu thanked the party for the opportunity to fly its flag during the governorship contest, noting that the experience was one he valued.

“Let me also thank the party through you for providing me the opportunity to use the Labour Party platform to contest the last governorship election of our state,” he stated.

Moghalu extended his sincere regards to party members and requested that his appreciation be conveyed to them.

“Please, accept as always, the assurance of my sincere regards and kindly convey the same to the members,” the letter added.

Moghalu, who previously served as National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to the Labour Party ahead of the Anambra governorship election, where he emerged as the party’s candidate.

His candidacy was seen as part of the Labour Party’s broader effort to consolidate its growing influence in the South-East following its improved performance in recent national elections.

However, the Labour Party failed to secure victory in the Anambra governorship poll, with the incumbent party retaining control of the state.

Moghalu is yet to disclose the reasons for his resignation from the Labour Party, nor has he indicated his next political destination. The development has nonetheless sparked renewed speculation within Anambra’s political circles over possible realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
