A civic group has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to open the newly commissioned bus terminals in Mabushi and Kugbo, warning that their continued closure undermines efforts to improve transportation and curb insecurity in Abuja.
The facilities, inaugurated in June after significant public investment, remain locked months later, leaving commuters to rely on informal operators. Critics say this has prolonged the dangers associated with “one-chance” robberies, where unsuspecting passengers are attacked by criminal gangs posing as transport providers.
The FCT Professionals Forum said the failure to put the terminals into use has not only disappointed residents but also raised concerns about waste and poor planning. The group maintained that the infrastructure of such scale should have been fully prepared for operations before commissioning, rather than left idle while commuters contend with daily risks on the roads.
They warned that prolonged neglect could see the structures deteriorate before they serve their intended purpose. The group urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to act swiftly in ensuring the terminals are operational, noting that safer and more reliable public transport would ease the burden on residents.
The forum argued that Abuja deserves a working transport infrastructure that justifies the large sums spent on projects, and that the delay in activating the bus hubs has left the city’s commuters short-changed.
