Four die as truck rams into vehicles waiting for fuel in Enugu State

They probably would have lbeen alive if they had not gone out on Christmas Day to buy fuel at the approved rate at the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega station, on Naira Triangle in Enugu, the sate capital.

It, however, turned out that the search was the last for four persons who joined the long vehicular queue that morning as they were crushed
to death by a trailer conveying cows into the state.

The accident also left severe injuries on several other persons on the queue at the petrol filling station.

Police authorities confirmed the accident, but could only account for one dead and several wounded, whom they said were recuperating at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.

Eye witness described the death of one of the victims, whom he identified as Okoye, as devastating. “Okoye’s death it was the most painful,” he lamented.

The deceased was said to be on his way to Nnewi together with his family. He decided to join the long ueue for fuel at NNPC mega station. That is where the accident happened.

According to eye witness, the truck driver carrying cows lost control and rammed into several cars that queued to buy fuel.

But for the police intervention, the accident which occurred around 7:10 a.m., would have caused unrest in the community because people were already frustrated by the long queue.

The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police, Ebere Amaraizu, said the police intervention prevented the angry mob from burning down the trailer and entire cattle.
