A fresh cholera outbreak has killed five persons and left 16 others hospitalised in Kembu Village of Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State in October.

This was disclosed by the Acting Epidemiologist in the state ministry of health, Dr. Nuhu Bile, while speaking with journalists in Gombe yesterday.

Bile explained that following the outbreak, a team of medical personnel from the state responded by setting up clinical centres to curtail further spread of the epidemic.

He said the team discovered that two hand pumped boreholes that got spoilt in the area caused the cholera outbreak in the community.

He stated that the state, local governments and the World Health Organisation (WHO) are making effort to ensure that medications are available in designated facilities for treatment of the disease.

Bile, however, urged members of the public to ensure that they engage in environmental sanitation and drink clean potable water.

Gombe recorded about 500 cases of cholera with 13 deaths from May to October this year in five local councils of the state.
