The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists to desist from using expired tyres, to stem road crashes in the country.Mr David Mendie, Gombe State Sector Commander of the corps, made the appeal while briefing newsmen in Gombe on Friday.

He said that the use of expired tyres was a major factor responsible for road crashes and the loss of thousands of lives in the country today.

“I am advising motorists to ensure that they always checked the manufacturing and expiry dates of tyres before buying, so that they can be able to enjoy them for about four years.

“They must also ensure that they put in them the prescribed pressure, to prevent blow-outs that may lead to road crashes,” he said.

Mendie also urged motorists and commercial vehicle drivers to stop patronising sellers of “used tyres”.

According to him, excess pressure on tyres and allowing a vehicle to remain in one spot for long, even if it is a new car, can cause the tyre to blow-out, while in motion.

Mendie added that tyres can also expire even before four years, after they have been used to travel up to 80, 000 kilometres.

He advised motorists to always use seat belts and to stop carrying children below the age of 12 on the front seats.

NAN reports that the FRSC in Gombe on Friday observed special prayers at the Gombe Central Mosque, while church services would be held in the town on Sunday.

Similarly, the FRSC would on Saturday pay a visit to the Gombe Specialist Hospital, to present items to victims of roads crashes, as part of activities to mark the 2016 Remembrance Day for accident victims by the corps.
