The University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, has directed its members of staff to work for three days a week to cushion the effects of high cost of transportation occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.
The directive was contained in a special release tagged “Temporary Work Schedule Adjustment,” dated August 14, 2023.
The temporary work schedule adjustment was recommended, following the consideration and approval by the Senate that met on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
The university, in the release by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Ganiyu Oke Saliu, attributed the directive to the astronomical increase in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), known as petrol.
It said the increase in the pump price of PMS had imposed huge economic difficulties on Nigerians, noting that the impacts of the increment were more felt by salary earners that go to work every working day.
According to the directive, workers are expected to be coming to work for three days in rotation per week, with effect from Monday, August 14, 2023.
The management, however, said that those on essential duties are exempted from the adjustment.
It added that the temporary work schedule arrangement is subject to review in line with the general situation of things.
The UI workers were, therefore, enjoined to maintain commitment, open communication and cooperation towards ensuring a free workflow, including working from home where and when necessary.
It added: “In light of the foregoing, management seeks the understanding of all deans, directors, heads of department and units towards a smooth implementation of the intervention.”
