Godfatherism won’t dictate our actions, says Andoni leader

The Leader of the Andoni Legislative Assembly, Atunu Boma-Douglas, has assured the people of Andoni that the assembly under his leadership will be accessible and responsive to their needs.

This was contained in a statement by the Assistant Director of Press, Andoni Council, Martha Igbiks, who noted that Douglas emphasised the legislative arm will prioritise the voices of the people over “godfathers” and work collaboratively with the executive arm to pass laws that benefit the people of Andoni.

Boma-Douglas spoke in an interview after the Chairman of the council, Lucky Promise-Otuo, inaugurated the Andoni 10th Legislative Assembly, alongside the Vice Chairman of the Council, Rachael Ezekiel-Abigbani.

While proclaiming the 10th Andoni Legislative Assembly in Ngo town, Promise-Otuo urged the lawmakers to collaborate with his administration to bring development to the people of Andoni.

Promise-Otuo, while swearing in the Council’s Vice Chairman, Ezekiel-Abigbani, charged her to uphold her oath of office and commit herself to fostering development in the area.

Otuo said, “You have just been sworn in today. You have taken the oath of office. Remember,

You are not serving your family, you are serving the people of Andoni, so prioritise the interest of Andoni people, setting aside your personal interest and render your service with a clear conscience without discrimination. You have to give 100% support to this government so that we can move forward”.

For Boma-Douglas, he said: “We will be open to the people, not to godfathers,” Atunu Douglas stated. “We will not allow godfatherism to overshadow legislators. We will stand our ground and see how we can work with the executive to ensure we pass laws that will support and assist our people”.

He highlighted key focus areas, including sanitation, which he believes is crucial for the well-being of the Andoni. “I think the past administration, under the leadership of the Sole Administrator, Surv. Atajit Francis did very well concerning sanitation in Andoni,” he said. “We are going to key in to do better, to work in synergy with the executive arm of government to ensure that sanitation is carried out effectively.”

The Legislative Assembly’s priorities will include creating bylaws on issues such as sanitation, markets, and school security. Douglas assured the people that the assembly will work tirelessly to serve their interests and deliver on their mandate.
“We cannot disappoint our people,” the lawmaker said. “They trust us, we are voted to go and represent them. Their vote took us to the legislature, so we will listen to them.”

The Assembly leader concluded by expressing his commitment to working with the Chairman, Lucky Promise-Otuo to drive development in Andoni. “We will ensure we work with the executive to deliver on our mandate of delivering President Bola Tinubu, come 2027” he said.

With this pledge, the people of Andoni can expect a more responsive and accountable legislative assembly, working to address their needs and improve their lives.
