Gov. Abiodun inaugurates Council transition committees

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State addressing the Executive Council Strategy Session of his political appointees and permanent secretaries at Ogere…yesterday

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, yesterday inaugurated the Chairmen and members of the Transition Committee for the 20 Local Councils in the State.

The tenure of the elected Chairmen of the Councils ended in October last year, necessitating the need to set up the Transition Committees to temporarily run the Councils affairs.

The Governor, who challenged the members to use their new positions to assist his administration’s efforts to develop the State, also advised them to see their appointments as a transitory one, “which they must account for to ensure that they quickly settle down to turn the dreams and aspirations of the people into realities.”

At the well-attended event, which took place at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta, the Governor noted that the task before the chairmen was enormous, but added that, if the task was done conscientiously, it would become achievable and rewarding.

“Your appointment is transitory; you don’t have the luxury of time to wander. So, settle down immediately, work hard, get results and turn dreams into reality. I enjoin you all to always strive to complement the efforts of the state government at improving the welfare of our people and translate the people-oriented policies of our administration.

“Let me also inform you that you have no absolute power. Ensure that you operate in line with due process at all times and we will incorporate a system of check and balances,” he said, adding that their activities will be put under intense watch, while the transition lasts and even beyond.

He urged traditional rulers to support the Committee members in their onerous task. This, he observed, would create a fresh chapter in the effort for good governance at the grassroots level.

“You are to apply the funds at your disposal with prudence and undertake developmental projects that touch the lives of our people very positively. By doing this, your leadership can quickly make its mark in so many areas, in the area of roads, primary education, health care, sanitation and refuse collection in markets, with enhanced revenue generation amongst others.

“Let me use this opportunity to enjoin all our traditional rulers, community leaders and people in our various local governments to support the newly constituted transition committees. I urge all and sundry to join hands with the new leadership in our local governments across the state in making a fresh chapter in the effort for good governance at the grassroots. By doing this, the tenure of this transition committees will not only be a credit to the development plan in our dear state, but the successful implementation of this administration’s building our future together agenda,” he said.
