Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has expressed condolences following the death of Ruth Elton, a British-born Nigerian missionary who passed away at the age of 91.
Elton, widely regarded for her long-standing religious and humanitarian work in Nigeria, died in Osun State where she had resided for many years.
The announcement of her death was made in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
In the statement, Adeleke described Elton’s life as one marked by service and commitment to community development.
“From 1937, when she arrived in Nigeria with her father, Granville Elton, Ruth Elton served the Nigerian people with unfailing dedication, contributing not just to the spread of the gospel but also joining efforts to fight many health scourges in communities,” Adeleke said.
The governor recalled Elton’s early years in Nigeria, noting her involvement in grassroots health initiatives and her role in bridging gaps in gospel ministry. He also acknowledged her decision to renounce British citizenship in favour of Nigerian nationality, describing it as a reflection of her deep connection to the country and its people.
“I am devastated by the news of Ruth Elton’s passing, widely acknowledged as the oldest missionary to Nigeria. Although she passed away at the ripe age of 91, knowing her contributions over the years, I cannot help but feel the pain of such a loss,” Adeleke stated.
He added that Elton’s death would be felt deeply in Osun State, where she spent her final years.
“Her absence will be a heavy burden to us in Osun, where she breathed her last, but we will be consoled by the legacy of her impact and the everlasting honour that comes with her contributions to society,” he said.
Governor Adeleke prayed for the repose of Elton’s soul and encouraging members of the faith community to continue her legacy through service and compassion.
