Gov. Lalong upgrades two chiefdoms in Jos South

Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau upgraded two chiefdoms in Jos South Local Government Area on Thursday.

He presented staff of office to Gwom Rwey of Gyel, Da Nga Dangyang, upgraded to second class ruler, while Gwom Rwey of Zawan, Da Christopher Mancha was upgraded to third class ruler.

Performing the ceremony at the Jos South Local Government Secretariat, Lalong said the upgrading was a fulfilment the people’s desire for the establishment of their chiefdoms.

“The people of Gyel and Zawan can now attest to the fact that I made the promise not for campaign purposes, but because of my genuine love to take governance to the grassroots.

“It is also to ensure that people in Plateau are liberated,’’ he said.

Lalong added that his administration made the revival of traditional institutions one of its priorities to strengthen them to contribute meaningfully to the development of Plateau,

He added that the elevation of the stools was to engender social cohesion and to promote peaceful coexistence among Plateau people.

“We created 285 districts, restored two first-class chiefdoms, six-second class chiefdoms and 10 third-class chiefdoms across the state,’’ he said.

He added that the ceremony was a wake-up call for other communities, particularly those still prolonging the process of selecting their chiefs to make deliberate efforts at reaching decisions.

He urged the installed traditional rulers to adopt inclusiveness in their administration and charged them to maintain peace and security in their domains.

“I admonish you all to be more proactive and to carry your people along, irrespective of creed, religion or other affiliations.

“Also avoid using your selfish or sectional interest or any negative action to jeopardise the sanctity of the revered stool which you are occupying in trust for your people,’’ he admonished.

The governor also appealed to traditional leaders to advise their subjects, especially youths to desist from blocking roads in protest or in the expression of grievances.

He noted that such action tarnished the image of Plateau, known for its hospitality.

Lalong urged members of the two communities to cooperate with their rulers to enable them to succeed in their duties.

Earlier, chairman of Jos South Local Government Council, Mr Gideon Dandereng, commended Lalong for elevating the rulers and for his leadership style which had fostered peace and unity.

Responding, the Gwom Rwey Gyel thanked Lalong for making the upgrade a reality and assured him that the traditional rulers would discharge their duties diligently.
