The Umuigbo Youth Progressive Association has kicked against alleged attacks on Igbo and non-Igbo residents in Lagos State, and, therefore, called on the state government and traditional rulers to publicly condemn the assault.

The Umuigbo Youth Progressive Association has kicked against alleged attacks on Igbo and non-Igbo residents in Lagos State, and, therefore, called on the state government and traditional rulers to publicly condemn the assault.

The group, at the weekend, alleged that the attacks were deliberately promoted for political gains, with no consideration on the long-term consequences on peaceful co-existence of Lagosians.

In a statement signed by the National Chairman of the association, Gabriel Emmanuel, the group maintained that every Nigerian is free to live, work and do his or her legitimate business in any part of the country without being terrorised or subjected to threats of any kind.

He said: “Recently, a particular tribe who refer to themselves as indigenes of Lagos State deliberately attacked the life and property of Igbo and non-Igbo residents in the state, and this is unacceptable.”

“We make bold to state that the state government will be held responsible for whatever happens to the Igbo and non-Igbos residents in Lagos before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

“We are waiting for a response from the state government guaranteeing the security of life and property of everyone resident in Lagos, irrespective of tribe or religion.”
