Women in Surveying (WIS), a subgroup of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), have called for support for correctional centres to fulfill their mandate.
Coordinator of the group in Lagos State, Olajumoke Joseph, made the call during their visit to the Female Correctional Centre in Kirikiri, Apapa, where various items like toiletries, sanitary products and other personal hygiene products were donated to the inmates.
Joseph said the call became necessary following the prevalent economic situation in the country and the need to take proper care of inmates.
She stressed the need for Nigerians and organisations to assist the centre since government cannot meet all their needs.
According to her, the visit was part of a three-day event to mark another gathering of women surveyors in Lagos State to exchange ideas, collaborate with other female professionals in the built industry and impact the society.
The visit to Kirikiri Correctional Centre, she said, was the first of its kind for the association whose main focus has always been visiting secondary schools for career enlightenment programmes to encourage the girl child to make Surveying and Geoinformatics a career of choice in the university or polytechnic.
She said the aim this year was to extend such initiatives to the women in the correctional centre.
Receiving the items, an official of the correctional centre thanked the women group for the gesture and pledged proper utilisation of the items.
