Gunmen have kidnapped an Islamic cleric, Fasasi Ola Mejabi and his younger brother while conveying a corpse in Kogi State. The cleric and others were conveying the corpse of the late Chief Imam of Ayegunle Gbede, Sheikh Musa Olorunkemi, from Lokoja on Sunday to Ayegunle Gbede in Ijumu Local Council of the state for burial when they ran into the kidnappers.

One of the occupants of the car who escaped, said the incident occurred at Oshokoshoko, along Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba road.He explained that their car was moving ahead of the vehicle carrying the corpse of the late Sheikh Musa who died on Sunday morning after a brief illness.

A source told The Guardian yesterday that the victims’ telephone lines have been switched off since their abduction, but added that the kidnappers contacted the family on Monday morning demanding N10 million ransom.

At press time, spokesperson for Kogi State police command, Superintendent of Police (SP), William Aya was yet to speak on the matter as calls to his line did not connect.

However, Security Adviser to the state government, Jerry Omadora, confirmed the incident, adding that security agents in the state are doing everything possible to rescue the victims from the kidnappers’ den.
