Gunmen suspected to be kidnapers at the weekend abducted an aide to the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, Austin Onianwa, in his house. It was gathered that the hoodlums had laid siege for the aide for close to two hours before they struck.

They were said to have accosted him and members of his family at gunpoint and ordered him into their car after shooting at two persons, before driving their victim to an unknown destination.

Confirming the incident, the police image-maker in the state, Andrew Aniamaka, assured the citizens that the police would do everything possible to ensure his release unhurt.

Unconfirmed sources said Onianwa’s abductors had established contact with the family, adding that they were asking for N200 million ransom. At the home of the victim, relations were seen wearing long faces while the victim’s wife cried profusely.

Eyewitness said the armed men drove in a bus with tinted windscreen and no plate numbers. Family sources said the kidnap might not be unconnected with the communal crisis in his community.
