Notorious gang leader in Akwa Ibom killed by police

Gunmen suspected to be cultists have murdered four persons including a pregnant lady and a pastor in Ogbakiri, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Guardian gathered that the pregnant teenager, Miss Queen Amah, went to the stream to fetch water with her friend, Mini Elizabeth, near Rumoro river in Ogbakiri community when the gunmen accosted them, took Amah to a distance and slaughtered her while her unborn baby was removed for rituals.

A community source from the area who craved anonymity disclosed that Miss Elizabeth from Igodo’s compound in the same village was later captured by the same hoodlums and was buried alive in a bush near the river. Other victims were Pastor Joseph Nheme and Mr. Kingsley Owhonda.

The community source disclosed further that Pastor Nheme from Igodo’s compound, was shot dead in the river while fishing with his son, Godknows Iheme, by the same hoodlums. According to him, Godknows narrowly escaped and his father’s body was taken away by the hoodlums suspected to be ritualists.

It was also gathered that Owhonda of Wokne’s compound while fishing from the same river was abducted, whisked away to a neighbouring bush, where he was tied on the tree and his body amputated in pieces.

Sources added that after the attack, hundreds of youth in Rumuoro visited the scene in search of their loved ones but could not find any of the four persons.According to community sources, the search team, however, discovered a fishing net, two female clothes, two pairs of male trousers and clothes and a jerry can rubber, all belonging to the victims of the attack.

Leaders of Rumuoro community have appealed to security agents to come to their aid, urging that the suspected armed gangs should be arrested and brought to justice. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, has confirmed the invasion by the gunmen, stating that a fisherman lost his life in the incident. Omoni said the fisherman who lost his life was hit by a stray bullet at the waterfront.

He further said the culprits have been identified as cultists from Okpororo in Ogbakiri, adding that they invaded Rumuoro village, where they shot sporadically. The PPRO, however, said the command has intensified efforts to arrest the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to book.

Meanwhile, respite would soon come to the people of Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun local councils of Akwa Ibom State, as the police command has killed the leader of a notorious gang that has been terrorizing them for sometime now. He is known as Isaac, aka Stainless, was the second in command to one Akaninyene Jumbo otherwise known as Iso Akpafid, who was killed also by the police on January 15, 2018.

Parading the body of the suspected criminal at the police headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia yesterday, the Commissioner of Police,Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said Stainless was killed on Wednesday during exchange of gunfire.“In the past two years, Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun local councils of the state have witnessed an upsurge in criminality and brigandage due to the activities of the notorious criminal group led by Akaninyene Jumbo a.k.a Iso Akpafid.

“Joint operation of the security agencies in the state led to death of Iso Akpafid on January, 15, 2018. The people’s jubilation thatfollowed was, however, cut short by the emergence of a wicked and brutal self-crowned successor of Iso Akpafid, who adopted the title Stainless.

“Successive Stainless led other hoodlums on a revenge mission and unleashed terror on Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun local councils by killing, maiming, raping, kidnapping, issuing of threat letters and burning of houses indiscriminately.“Disturbed by this ugly development, the security agencies in the state re-strategized and mounted massive operations against the criminal gang. This led to the arrest of many, who in spite of numerous appeals, refused to surrender their weapons.

“Our efforts received a boost at about 10:30pm on April 18, with the death of the current and most brutal gang leader known as Stainless, but whose real name is Isaac. He was known to the security community and close aides as Baggy Short. He was gunned down after an exchange of gunfire, thus bringing to an end the reign of terror of Iso Akpafid and his lieutenants in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun. We have chosen to parade his body to demystify his invisibility and reassure residents.people of Etim Ekp and Ukanafun of their safety to encourage those who have fled the areas to return home”, he said

According to the commissioner, the  security situation has improved in Ikot Ekpene, Plaza; Eket and many other areas across the state. He appreciated the Inspector General of Police, other security Chiefs for approving the joint operations as well as the state government for
supporting their effort.

He solicited continued cooperation from members of the public to address security challenges in the state, noting that reliable information from some members of the public has assisted the police in arresting the hoodlums.

“In the course of this operation, the Inspector General of Police was magnanimous in offering a window of opportunity for people with illegal weapons to turn them in. This yielded favourable result as many arms were mopped up across the state”.

He revealed that some hoodlums have moved their activities into forests, noting that the security agencies would smoke them out. He said that arrangements had also been concluded with authorities of higher institutions and students’ unions to flush out cult members.“I will like to seize this opportunity to call on all peace-loving people of Akwa Ibom State to continue to cooperate with the police and other security agencies to maintain law and order by furnishing us with credible information” he added.
