Gunmen kill PDP chieftain in Benue
IMMEDIATE past Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Lumunga Zegeguve was weekend murdered by some unknown gunmen at his home in Katsina-Ala.
Benue State Police Public Relations’ Officer, ASP Austin Amaechi Ezeani who disclosed this to The Guardian in a telephone chat said the incident occurred at about 5pm in Tiir area, stating, “it is a case of criminal conspiracy.”
Ezeani said the gunmen who numbered five (5) were heavily armed and after shooting the party chieftain fled, however, but police arrested one Orseer Zegeguve, a relation of the victim.
According to the PPRO, three (3) empty shells of AK47 were recovered at the scene of the incident, even as he said the police is on the trail of other members of the gang, adding that the body of the late party chairman has since been deposited at the General hospital, Katsina-Ala.
Katsina-Ala Local Government Area has witnessed several incidents of attacks by unidentified gunmen on individuals with one of the recent killing being an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Baba Ibrahim who was on a special mission from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to investigate the case of cattle rustling in the area.
The Guardian recalls that in March, the state police Commissioner, Mr. Hyacinth Dagala, confirmed the killing of two chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were in Governor Gabriel Suswam’s senatorial campaign vehicle, by suspected gunmen at Gbinde in Ushongo Local Council.
Dagala also told newsmen that a police corporal was also killed during a stop and search exercise near the Federal Government College, Vandeikya.
Police spokesperson, Austin Ezeani also told The Guardian that the party’s chieftains, Agbatse Tarkighir and Degeh Ayaahemba, were PDP council leaders, who were traveling from Katsina-Ala to Adikpo when another vehicle overtook and suddenly opened fire on them.
According to him, two other passengers in the vehicle sustained injuries and were receiving treatment at a hospital in Ushongo, while the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital in Adikpo, Kwande Local Council.
Motive for the killing, he said, was yet to be established, but he assured that the police would bring the culprits to book even as he appealed to the public to desist from all acts of criminality, especially the killing of innocent people.
