A human rights organisation, the Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT), has called on the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate alleged security lapses surrounding the recent enforcement of a Federal High Court interim forfeiture order on a property in Guzape, Abuja.

The group made the call on Wednesday in a press briefing by its representative, Dr Maxwell Chibuike Opara, following an incident at a property located on O.B. Lulu-Briggs Street, Guzape, where operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly encountered resistance while carrying out the court order.

INAHURAT alleged that EFCC officials were confronted by individuals at the property during the enforcement operation, leading to a confrontation before the agency eventually took control of the premises.

The group commended the EFCC operatives for carrying out the assignment and urged relevant authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the resistance and the presence of armed personnel at the location.

According to the organisation, some police officers were allegedly found at the property during the operation and were subsequently arrested by the EFCC.

It urged the IGP, Tunji Disu, to order a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the alleged deployment of the officers, including whether the deployment followed due process and official authorisation.

“The Nigeria Police Force has important questions to answer regarding the circumstances that led to the presence of the officers at the location,” the group said, while stressing the need for transparency and accountability.

The organisation also raised concerns over allegations surrounding the issuance of a passport linked to the suspect in the matter, calling on the Minister of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to clarify the circumstances surrounding the document.

INAHURAT said the matter had raised broader concerns about the integrity of security and identity management systems, urging relevant agencies to investigate any possible misconduct.

The group disclosed that a petition had been submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over the alleged passport-related issues and called for a thorough investigation.

It further appealed to the AGF to review the legal and prosecutorial issues arising from the case to ensure that the administration of justice remained independent and free from compromise.

The organisation maintained that all allegations should be subjected to proper investigation by competent authorities, while those found culpable should face appropriate legal consequences.

The EFCC has yet to publicly respond to INAHURAT’s statement.
