
Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has described as unacceptable, postoperative complications among six patients who underwent cataract surgeries at National Eye Centre, Kaduna.
A statement by Tashikalmah Hallah, Special Assistant (Media and External Relations) to Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, noted that all patients deserve good quality health care in all health facilities, and directed investigation into the cases.
The minister said the Federal government places a high premium on clinical governance to improve the quality of health care in Nigeria’s health system.
A panel set up by the ministry will immediately investigate the cases to understand what led to the adverse events, the systemic causes, and ensure appropriate actions are taken, following due processes that ensure fairness.
The panel will consist of five members, including three consultant ophthalmologists and two representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health. It will be headed by an external consultant ophthalmologist, to ensure independence.
Minister of State, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said: “In this new era, emphasis will be placed on high quality care. Substandard quality of care to our citizens is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Pate reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure all Nigerians have access to quality health services, irrespective of age, ethnicity, income, or location.
He added: “Improving the quality of health services is paramount to rebuilding the people’s trust in our health institutions.”
