A containerised supermarket along Lubcon Road in the Mandate Area of Ilorin, Kwara State, has been completely destroyed after a fire outbreak triggered by a spark from a high-tension electricity transmission line.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday and left goods and property worth millions of naira reduced to ashes, throwing residents and nearby traders into panic.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, emergency responders received a distress call at about 3:08 a.m. and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene in an attempt to contain the blaze.
The agency confirmed that the affected structure was a containerised shop being used as a supermarket, which was already engulfed in flames before firefighters arrived.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started when a spark from a high-tension transmission line positioned directly above the building fell onto combustible materials, igniting the outbreak.
Although firefighters succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining shops and properties, the supermarket was completely destroyed before the situation was brought under control.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service warned residents and business owners to avoid constructing structures under or near high-tension power lines, stressing that such locations pose serious safety risks.
He emphasized the need for strict adherence to building regulations and safety guidelines to prevent avoidable fire disasters.
The incident adds to growing concerns over recurring fire outbreaks in Ilorin and highlights ongoing challenges surrounding urban safety and electrical infrastructure management in the state.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while efforts continue to strengthen public awareness on fire prevention and emergency response.
