How Dr. Asogwa is advancing diagnostic systems and healthcare preparedness

United States-based Nigerian healthcare professional Dr. Chukwujekwu Christian Asogwa is advancing research and healthcare leadership focused on stronger diagnostic systems, evidence-based decision-making and public health preparedness. Drawing on more than five years of medical experience in Nigeria and Botswana, he is currently studying healthcare administration in the United States and preparing for a future career in pathology.

Although Asogwa is not currently practising as a physician in the United States, his ongoing research and professional development reflect a broader goal: contributing to healthcare systems that detect diseases earlier, improve diagnostic accuracy and respond more effectively to public health threats. His international clinical experience has exposed him to challenges—including diagnostic delays, limited laboratory capacity and gaps in workforce preparedness—that also carry lessons for healthcare delivery and health security worldwide.

During his years of clinical practice, Asogwa encountered patients whose symptoms suggested one condition while laboratory findings revealed another. He witnessed families awaiting critical test results and clinicians working with limited diagnostic resources—experiences that strengthened his belief that accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment.

“People often think healthcare begins with treatment, but treatment is only as good as the diagnosis that guides it,” Asogwa said. “Before we prescribe, operate or reassure a patient, we must first understand what is happening inside the body.”

A graduate of the University of Nigeria College of Medicine, Asogwa completed his internship at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. He later served as a medical officer in Nigeria for more than three years before continuing his professional journey with Botswana’s Ministry of Health. His clinical, administrative and operational responsibilities provided valuable insight into how leadership, workforce planning, resource allocation and laboratory capacity affect patient outcomes.

“It became clear that many healthcare challenges do not begin when a patient arrives at the hospital,” he said. “They begin with whether the system has invested in the people, laboratories, technology and processes required to make accurate diagnoses possible.”

Asogwa’s work is also supported by a growing research record. He co-authored a peer-reviewed study published in GMS Hygiene and Infection Control and indexed in PubMed Central, examining healthcare workers’ knowledge of monkeypox in Nigeria. Although the study found encouraging awareness levels, it also identified gaps requiring continuous professional education and stronger epidemic preparedness.

“Epidemics do not wait for healthcare systems to prepare,” he said. “Preparedness is built every day through education, collaboration and continuous learning. Strengthening the knowledge of healthcare professionals improves patient care and reinforces the ability of health systems to respond to emerging threats.”

He also co-authored a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Value in Health, evaluating contingency management and cognitive behavioural therapy alongside pharmacotherapy in treating stimulant use disorder. The research reflects his commitment to translating scientific evidence into better clinical decisions, more effective interventions and improved patient outcomes.

Asogwa is currently completing a Master of Healthcare Administration at Union Commonwealth University, where he is strengthening his knowledge of healthcare leadership, policy, quality improvement and organizational management. By combining medical experience, research and administrative training, he is developing an interdisciplinary foundation for addressing diagnostic and healthcare-delivery challenges.

Looking ahead, Asogwa is preparing for a career in pathology, with particular interest in the growing role of molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, artificial intelligence and precision medicine. He believes these fields can improve early disease detection, reduce diagnostic errors and strengthen preparedness for infectious diseases and other public health challenges.

“The future of diagnostics is not just about smarter machines,” he said. “It is about smarter systems that combine technology, skilled professionals, effective leadership and evidence-based policies.”

Asogwa envisions collaboration among clinicians, pathologists, laboratory scientists, healthcare administrators, researchers and public health professionals. Through this multidisciplinary approach, he hopes to contribute to efforts that reduce diagnostic delays, improve quality assurance, strengthen disease surveillance and expand access to reliable diagnostic services, particularly in underserved communities.

His professional journey demonstrates how international medical experience can inform healthcare research and innovation in the United States and beyond. As health systems confront emerging diseases, workforce pressures, health disparities and rapidly evolving technologies, Asogwa believes investing in diagnostics and preparedness will remain essential to protecting patients and strengthening public health.

For Asogwa, every life saved begins with a question answered correctly
