Human rights advocates risk becoming victims of process, says group
Akwa Ibom Human Rights Community has said that with the recent precedent set through the imprisonment of the human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, advocates may end up becoming victims of the process.
Effiong was last week sentenced to jail by Akwa Ibom State Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Obot, for contempt of court.
The body, in a statement, yesterday, said lawyers might no longer feel very free to do their advocacy since a precedent has been set.
The rights group, which suggested a conciliatory approach to the matter, cautioned those intending to intervene on the matter to exercise restraint owing to the sensitive nature of the case.
It, therefore, urged the judge to transfer the matter to another court to avoid further desecration of the temple of justice.
