HURIWA decries alleged opposition victimisation in Imo, seeks FG intervention

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised fresh concerns over what it described as a growing pattern of political victimisation and violence against opposition figures in Imo State.

The group called on the federal government to urgently intervene to prevent further escalation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the civil rights group alleged that recent developments in Ideato North and Ideato South Local Government Areas point to a troubling erosion of democratic freedoms.

HURIWA said reports reaching it indicated that supporters of a political movement in the area had been subjected to harassment, intimidation and violent attacks, allegedly by individuals operating under the cover of vigilante groups.

The organisation warned that such incidents, if left unchecked, could undermine the rule of law and weaken democratic institutions in the state.

“What is unfolding in Imo State is not merely a political disagreement; it is a dangerous descent into lawlessness, where democratic freedoms are being systematically eroded through force, fear and impunity,” the group stated.

It called on the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to take decisive action in line with his constitutional responsibilities by ensuring the safety of all residents and protecting their rights irrespective of political affiliation.

HURIWA stressed that the right to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and political participation are guaranteed under the Constitution and must not be compromised under any circumstances.

According to the group, there have been attempts to disrupt lawful political gatherings.

These include alleged efforts to seize venues, halt meetings and destroy property belonging to individuals engaged in legitimate political activities.

“These actions amount to a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic framework,” the statement noted, adding that citizens must not be prevented from exercising their constitutional rights.

The organisation maintained that the state government bears ultimate responsibility for maintaining law and order.

It warned that any perceived inaction could attract broader scrutiny.

HURIWA further cautioned that continued violence and intimidation could deepen political tensions and create an atmosphere of fear among residents.

Beyond the political situation, the group also highlighted concerns over alleged human rights abuses at a police facility in Owerri, commonly referred to as “Tiger Base.”

It cited reports indicating cases of arbitrary detention, torture, extortion and other forms of inhumane treatment.

HURIWA described the allegations as serious violations of both national and international legal standards.

“These practices represent a direct violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and applicable laws, including the Anti-Torture Act. They must be thoroughly investigated,” it said.

The group called for an independent probe into the operations of the facility.

It urged authorities to ensure that any officers found culpable are brought to justice.

HURIWA also appealed to key federal security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and the Ministry of Defence, to step in and restore order in the affected areas.

It said there was an urgent need to safeguard lives and property while guaranteeing that all Nigerians can freely participate in political processes without intimidation.

The organisation reiterated that democracy thrives on tolerance, inclusiveness and respect for the rule of law and warned against any attempt to silence dissenting voices through force.

Among its demands, the group called for an immediate end to attacks on opposition members, while demanding the withdrawal of armed groups from political spaces and the protection of lawful assemblies.

“The people of Imo State must not be denied their democratic rights by any individual or authority,” the group said.
