Civil Rights Advocacy group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), yesterday, raised the alarm concerning the activities of alleged crooks, land racketeers and blackmailers in Enugu State.

The group alleged that these persons without proven means of livelihood have lined up strategies to use some ethically porous online media and other media without quality control measures to peddle unsubstantiated allegations on land-related forfeiture allegations against Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

According to the group, the antic was to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of the government of Enugu State and that of the reform-minded governor.

National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, also accused disgruntled political elements and internally displaced politicians in Enugu State, of using such disgraced and morally disreputable online media to spread fake news about the activities of the administration.

The rights group said generations unborn ought to commend the current governor HURIWA stated that it embarked on wide-ranging fact-finding visitations to Enugu State without the knowledge of the government to ascertain certain insinuations of land-related crimes linked to some officials of the state.

HURIWA claimed that far-reaching findings showed that indeed at no time in the recent history of the Southeast has any political office holder did as much spade works and fundamental land ownership and administrative reforms as much as the current governor of Enugu State.

The rights group alerted media owners to be vigilant and be wary of being duped and used by criminals parading as businessmen peddling absolute falsehood.
