‘I am safe and sound,’ Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer says from Kuje prison

Aloy Ejimakor, the arrested lawyer of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has spoken up about the state of his health from detention.

Ejimakor was arrested on Monday in Abuja during a protest organised under the banner “#FreeNnamdiKanuNow” convened by a human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore.

In a post shared on X, Ejimakor announced that he is safe and sound, though he is still being held in Kuje Prison in Abuja.

“I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions,” he wrote.

He added that the magistrate insisted on detaining him till Friday.

“He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way. For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” Ejimakor added.

His client, Kanu, has been in detention since June 2021, after he was re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria by the Nigerian government.

He was first arrested in 2015 by the Department of State Services (DSS) and charged with treasonable felony for leading IPOB, which seeks to restore the defunct Biafra Republic.

Kanu was granted bail on health grounds in 2017 but fled Nigeria after soldiers raided his home in Abia State. After his rearrest in 2021, he was detained at the DSS facility in Abuja, facing multiple charges, including treasonable felony and terrorism-related offences.

The Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him in 2022, ruling that his rendition was unlawful. But the federal government appealed, and the Supreme Court later overturned that discharge, sending the case back to trial.

His legal team has continued to demand his release and a fair trial over the years.
