Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, yesterday said his government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state would not engage in “needless opposition” against the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

He told a delegation of the PDP, who paid him a condolence visit at his country home, Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area on Saturday, that since Ebonyi State had a lot of challenges, it would make no sense for it to embark on “senseless opposition.”

But he was quick to add that supporting Buhari’s programmes did not in any way mean that he and other members of the PDP in the state would abandon their party. Reiterating his support for President Buhari’s anti-corruption programme, Umahi said he believes in the President’s honesty and commitment to bringing graft to the barest minimum level in the country.

The governor said: ”A number of people, who like to jump from one place to the other, have been asking me and I said look, we are in PDP and we remain in PDP but are supporting the programmes of Mr. President.

“We like what he is doing in the fight against corruption. You can see honesty in his administration and his commitment to rebuilding Nigeria. I share certain virtues with him.

“We as a state will continue to support him. To oppose him is to oppose the truth but as we support him, we have to support our party, the PDP, so that together we can stand.

“We will not engage in needless opposition to the FG. When election comes, we can divide along party lines but immediately after, we can  come together  as a people to build the nation.

“Ebonyi State has a lot of challenges and we will not engage in senseless opposition to the central government.  We will offer constructive opposition and advice. I believe that what people misconstrue as opposition is advice. When things are going well, you need to commend; there is no need to advise or oppose.

“I want you (PDP leaders in the state) to continue to keep our party together and remain stronger.”

Umahi had narrated the last moments of his mother, Deaconess Margaret Umahi, at an Enugu-based hospital, saying his family was grateful to God that she passed on peacefully. He added that she died a few minutes after the hospital management certified her fit to go home on Tuesday morning.

Governor Umahi said while it is natural for one to feel pained by the loss of a loved one, the Umahis were thankful to  God that their mother  lived a life that touched many others positively.
