THE Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal, yesterday, said he needs prayers to perform satisfactorily on his job, even as he disclosed that but for leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and Bisi Akande, among others, he would not have been appointed into office.

Lawal, who made the call in Abuja at a Thanksgiving organised in his honour, said his assignment comes with peculiar challenges, for which he needs divine wisdom to serve.

He said, “The job of the SGF is a simple one. Files are brought before you; you make the necessary corrections and required input as spelt out or earlier discussed. Unless you have another motive other than to do the job honestly, the job is a simple one.

“But in all of these, there are things that must be done right. I need prayers to do this job, to succeed on this assignment. Those who know me, know that I cannot be influenced to do what is not right,” Babachir said.

He said his friendship with some top politicians in the Southwest, particularly Bisi Akande, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others, might have influenced the President to appoint him as SGF.

“I am Secretary to the Government today, because those people that I mentioned were the very first to put the idea in the mind of the President; they were the ones that made it possible.  Because if it has been left to northerners, it is doubtful if they will make a Christian man as the SGF,” he said.‬

Meanwhile, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, commended Engr. Babachir on his appointment, asking him to bring his wealth of experience to bear in office.

Tinubu, noted that while some of his contemporaries have succumbed to the temptation of amassing illicit wealth and abusing power and privilege, Lawal has remained faithful to the course of the nation and that his eye for detail and due process makes him the best man for the job.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Lagos Sate Governor, Habib Aruna, Tinubu, who was represented at the event by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, was quoted as saying, “If you are looking for a man who is diligent in his work with a keen eye for details and due process, there is none better than Babachir Lawal.”
