The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has bolstered security along the waterways of Rivers State by donating six gunboats to the Nigeria Police Force.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has bolstered security along the waterways of Rivers State by donating six gunboats to the Nigeria Police Force.

The initiative is aimed at combating piracy, armed robbery, and other criminal activities threatening the state’s marine domain.

The donation, announced by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations, Ali Mohammed Ali, on behalf of the IGP, was a direct response to persistent complaints from residents of Bonny about piracy and robbery in the region.

Ali noted that the gunboats would complement existing crime-fighting efforts to ensure the state’s safety and tranquillity.

Addressing the significance of the donation, the IGP highlighted the strategic importance of Nigeria’s marine domain to the economy. He underscored the need for robust policing through visibility patrols and prompt action against criminals to attract investors and create employment opportunities.

The IGP, however, warned that the equipment must strictly be used for public security purposes and not for private guard services.

The donation aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises enhancing security and sustaining the progress of the police.

Ali reiterated the IGP’s commitment to ensuring the judicious use of the gunboats.

The Rivers State Government expressed gratitude for the gesture. Speaking at the event on behalf of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, lauded the IGP for the thoughtful initiative.

Danagogo described the donation as a significant boost to the state’s fight against sea piracy, a pressing issue for the maritime community.

Fubara, in his message, reaffirmed the administration’s prioritisation of security and peace in the state. He pledged continued support for the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to sustain efforts in maintaining order.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adebola Hamzat hailed the launch of the gunboats as an “epoch-making event” in the battle against maritime crime. He expressed confidence in the police’s ability to reduce criminal activities to a minimum.

The Rivers Commissioner of Police, in his vote of thanks, praised the IGP for addressing the state’s security needs, assuring that the gunboats would be effectively utilised to safeguard the waterways and protect residents.
