The controversy over the actual salary and allowances of federal lawmakers refused to be laid to rest despite Tuesday’s clarification by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) following the claim by Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP – Kano South) that he earns N21 million in allowances every month apart from monthly salary of about N1 million.

Chairman of RMAFC, a body responsible for fixing salaries and allowances of public servants, Mohammed Shehu, on Tuesday, revealed that each member of the Senate collects a total monthly salary and allowances of N1,063,860.

However, speaking to the BBC Hausa Service yesterday, Sumaila said: “My monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000. But given the increase effected, in the Senate, each Senator gets N21 million every month as running cost.”

Reacting to the controversy, Kaduna ex-lawmaker, Shehu Sani, said he has been vindicated regarding his claim on the monthly earnings of senators.  In a post on his X handle on Wednesday, the social critic said: “Yesterday, the RMFAC refuted my statement, but I’m now vindicated by Senator Sumaila who confirmed that the monthly alert is N21 million and not N1 million as claimed. RMFAC make una mind yourself.”

Sani who represented Kaduna Central during the 8th Assembly, once publicly disclosed that each Senator collects a monthly running cost of N13.5 million in addition to the monthly N750,000 prescribed by RMAFC.

The issue of the amount received by lawmakers stirred up fresh controversies last week when former President Olusegun Obasanjo chided the National Assembly members for fixing bogus salaries and emoluments for themselves in contravention of extant laws.
