Imo automates civil service, promotes welfare of workers

The Imo State Government says it has successfully automated civil service operations in a bid to enhance transparency, eliminate fraud, and ensure faster service delivery.

Governor Hope Uzodinma disclosed this in a statewide broadcast, highlighting the digital transformation of public service processes as one of his administration’s key achievements since assuming office.

“Our goal was not just to restore physical infrastructure but also to build institutional capacity. We digitised civil service operations to stamp out fraud and improve efficiency,” the governor said.

According to him, the automation project was complemented by the training and retraining of civil servants to equip them with modern workplace skills. He further revealed that promotions across the board have been implemented, reflecting a commitment to staff motivation.

“All deserving workers were promoted. This was accompanied by regular salary payments without delay, including arrears owed to pensioners,” Uzodinma stated.

The governor added that in line with the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, civil servants now receive their full entitlements, including annual palliatives based on the state’s financial strength.

In a rare gesture of support, he also announced that the government provides free transportation for public workers to commute to and from their places of work. Permanent secretaries, he said, now benefit from official vehicles to enhance their mobility and productivity.

Observers say the announcement underscores a deliberate effort by the state government to project competence in service delivery and maintain industrial harmony. However, it comes amid broader concerns across Nigeria over delayed wages and unpaid entitlements in many states.

While no independent verification of the claims was provided during the broadcast, some civil service union leaders in the state have previously acknowledged improvements in salary disbursement.
