An Owerri Magistrates court has convicted 40 people in the last four weeks for indiscriminate dumping of refuse at unauthorised places in the capital city of Imo State.

An Owerri Magistrates court has convicted 40 people in the last four weeks for indiscriminate dumping of refuse at unauthorised places in the capital city of Imo State.

Also, the Magistrate, Obinna Njemanze, at weekend convicted 14 people, including two women for the same offence.

Njemanze ordered the convicts are to pay fines or do compulsory  community service.

They were arrested by joint team of Imo State Orientation Agency (ISOA) officials, Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), during midnight and early morning hours patrols.

The latest arrests were carried out between Thursday, February 17 and Friday, February 18, 2022.

Njemanze ruled that the convicts, who pleaded guilty, contravened Section 26 (c) of the Imo State Law No. 5 of 2022, which established the Imo State Waste Management Agency (ISWMA).

Speaking after the court session, the Director General of the ISOA, Chief Ethelbert Okere, said their conviction will serve as a deterrent to others, pointing out that, at least, both the convicts and their relations had to sacrifice other things they had to do that day to attend the court sitting.
