Organised labour will, today, begin a total shutdown of Imo State over alleged violent disruption of Workers’ Day celebration in Owerri by agents of the state government.

Labour, which said it strongly condemned the unprovoked assault on workers on their day of celebration, said the industrial action would be indefinite until the state government restores and guarantees protection of life and property of workers in the state.

A communiqué issued, yesterday, after an emergency joint Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria  (TUC), on Monday, resolved that all affiliates of both NLC and TUC in the state are to withdraw their services beginning from midnight yesterday.

In a statement signed by general secretaries of the NLC and TUC, Emmanuel Ugboaja and Nuhu Toro, respectively, the joint CWC, which stated that industrial peace was no longer guaranteed in the state, said it would hold Governor Hope Uzodinma responsible for any harm done to any worker in the state now or during the industrial action.

Noting that the labour movement was prepared for a marathon struggle, the unions advised the state’s residents to stock up on necessities.

The congresses alleged that the state government has grossly violated the rules of engagement among the social partners in industrial relations in the country, by using thugs to violently disrupt this year’s May Day in the state.

It alleged that properties were vandalised and looted by the invading thugs of the government, while some workers sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of the attack.

It alleged that the state government has become a serial abuser of workers’ rights and privileges, committing several infractions in the process. The groups resolved that the state government would sign the agreement reached between it and workers earlier in March.

It stated that the NLC and TUC would monitor compliance of affiliates with the decisions of the joint CWC in session, adding that organised labour would not hesitate to escalate it into a nationwide strike action if positive results are not achieved quickly within days.
