Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Imo State chapter, has aborted its proposed three-man ad hoc delegates election over alleged attempts by some party leaders to compromise the process.

The election scheduled to hold last Saturday, according to the state party Chairman, Charles Ugwu, was suspended following an unresolved matter between the party’s leadership and members of the five-man panel sent by the national body to conduct the exercise.

Speaking to newsmen at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, yesterday, Ugwu said the decision became necessary to guarantee and sustain transparency and internal democracy in the party.

He said: “In line with the provisions of our party’s constitution and guidelines for the conduct of primaries, the PDP in Imo, yesterday, prepared and mobilised our members for congresses at the 305 electoral wards of the state. What, however, is to be noted is that the five-man Electoral Panel for the Ward Congress, sent by the PDP National Secretariat to conduct the exercise did not come with the complete result sheets. Meanwhile, the exercise had almost been concluded in most wards where the option of consensus or harmonisation was reached.

“It is curious to note that out of the 27 local councils, result sheets, displayed by the panel, were 25 for the 25 local councils, while those of Ideato North and Ideato South could not be found and there was no explanation as to their disappearance.

“This inexplicable disappearance of the result sheets consequently raised a very serious question about the integrity of the team from our National Secretariat and indicated that the process was already obviously compromised.”

MEANWHILE, the crisis has resulted in altercations among the different persons, pointing accusing fingers at the National Secretariat and the national scribe of the party, Samuel Anyanwu.

Reacting to the accusation, Anyanwu, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ikenna Onuoha, distanced himself from the allegation by the spokesman of the Coalition of the United Political Parties (CUPP), alleging that he was a bad loser.

The statement reads: “Today, one Ikenga Ugochinyere, a House of Representatives aspirant in Imo, held a press conference to talk about his involvement in the gang up to blackmail the National Secretary of PDP, Anyanwu.

“Our concern is not to join issues with him and his co-travellers, but the rationale behind his decision to be economical with the truth as to state his role in the plot to blackmail Senator Anyanwu.”

IN another development, concerned leaders and youths of Imo North Senatorial District have urged political parties to field their candidates for the 2023 senate elections in areas from the northern part of the zone to ensure equity and fairness.

The group led by Mike Ejiogu, in a press conference held in Owerri, yesterday, insisted that, a “zoning arrangement for all elective positions in the area would guarantee peace, progress and even development of the area.”
