Residents of Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State have decried the deplorable state of roads in their community and the non-availability of other social amenities.

According to them, the state government’s negligence has caused untold hardship as the community risks being cut off from the rest of the state if nothing is done to remedy the situation.

The road, which is the only link to two federal institutions in the state, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, (FEDPONEK), and Federal University of Technology Owerri, (FUTO), is in a sorry state of disrepair. They, therefore, called on the state government to come to their rescue by fixing the road and reduce the sufferings of the residents.

Speaking to The Guardian, a businessman, Mr. Chiyeaka Igbokwe, said the poor state of the road has increased the suffering of road users aside the deaths from accidents due to the road and the hike in the price of commodities and transportation.

“Residents here are not happy about this road and its negative effects is taking a toll on us. We trek long distances and abandon our vehicles because of the constant damage on them. The road has become a death trap and that is how it is from here to Ihiagwa, Road Safety, Naze, Mbaise road and other surrounding communities. Almost all roads in the state are going from bad to worse and the government seems not interested in the welfare of its citizenry but in politics. Please, let them come to our aid before we are finally cut off from the rest of the state,” he said.

Former Student Union Executive of Federal Polytechnic Nekede and candidate of the All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP) for Imo State House of Assembly Owerri West, Alfred Chikezie, said the road is nothing to write home about and an indication that government has forgotten the people who are its primary responsibility.

A transporter who plys Wethedral-Nekede-Ihiagwa route, Mr. Chukwudi Anyaele, said commuters should blame the government for the increased fare because the dilapidated roads have caused increased maintenance costs.
