Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed worries over alleged deliberate failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prosecute electoral offenders.
In a goodwill message at post-election assessments and review forum on human rights in the 2023 general election, organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Abuja yesterday, the Governing Council Chair of the Human Rights Institute of NBA, Chinonye Obiagwu (SAN), called for the setting up of an electoral offence court to tackle the challenges of electoral offences, saying time has come for the unbundling of INEC for efficiency.
He also said it was important for INEC to collaborate with relevant security agencies to investigate allegations of electoral offences.
The Police Service Commission (PSC), represented by the Director, Legal of the Commission, Mr Dada Babatunde, said the outcome of the 2023 general and off-circle elections showed that there is commendable improvement in the electoral process of the country.
According to him, there is a lot of improvement in the conduct and action of Nigeria police in the area of protection of human rights during the elections.
He said: “Nigeria is on a journey for greater tomorrow and with continuous assessment and correction, the country will get it right in election conduct”
Earlier in his speech, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, SAN, said the commission is committed to enhancing the country’s democracy through promotion of human rights.
He said following the conclusion of general and off-cycle elections the commission carried out an investigation on human right violation during the election.
